Welcome to Port Saint Lucie

Incorporated on April 27, 1961, Port Saint Lucie has grown from a largely undeveloped stretch of land along the North Fork of the St. Lucie River into Florida's sixth-most populous city, home to more than 204,000 residents across nearly 121 square miles of St. Lucie County. That trajectory alone tells you something important about this place.

What sets Port Saint Lucie apart from its neighbors is scale paired with livability. Unlike the dense urban corridors of Fort Lauderdale to the south or the tourist-driven economy of Orlando to the northwest, Port Saint Lucie has developed as a genuinely residential city — one with distinct planned communities like Tradition and St. Lucie West, preserved natural spaces like Savannas Preserve State Park, and higher education anchored by Indian River State College. Families are served by the St. Lucie County School District, while the PGA Golf Club draws enthusiasts from across the region.

With a median age of 40, a climate that sits at the comfortable transition between subtropical and tropical, and continued investment in infrastructure and commerce, Port Saint Lucie is positioned to reward buyers who recognize long-term value before the rest of the market catches up.

Things to Do

Outdoor Recreation

Port Saint Lucie is a paradise for outdoor enthusiasts, anchored by some of Florida's most accessible natural spaces. Savannas Preserve State Park stretches across thousands of acres of freshwater marsh and scrub habitat, offering kayaking, hiking, and wildlife viewing along one of the last remaining Atlantic Coastal Ridge savannas in the state. For a more curated natural experience, the Port St. Lucie Botanical Gardens provides a serene escape with themed garden displays and walking paths. History buffs and hikers alike will appreciate Spruce Bluff Preserve, where trails wind past a prehistoric Ais Indian mound and canoe access points along the St. Lucie River. The city's extensive canal system also makes it a favorite among anglers and kayakers year-round.

Golf & Sports

Port Saint Lucie has earned a well-deserved reputation as a golfer's destination. The PGA Golf Club, located within the Veranda neighborhood, features multiple championship courses and serves as one of the premier public golf facilities in the southeastern United States. Baseball fans flock to Clover Park, the spring training home of the New York Mets, where the energy of Major League Baseball comes to the Treasure Coast each February and March.

Shopping & Dining

Tradition Square, the walkable town center of the master-planned Tradition community, hosts year-round festivities, outdoor events, and a mix of dining and retail options in a charming 1950s-inspired setting. The St. Lucie West corridor along I-95 offers a dense concentration of national retailers, casual dining chains, and local eateries. For waterfront dining and a more laid-back Florida atmosphere, the areas near the St. Lucie River provide seafood-focused options that reflect the city's coastal character.

Arts, Culture & Family Fun

The Tradition Center for Innovation area reflects the city's growing intellectual and cultural ambitions, while community events at Tradition Square draw families throughout the year with seasonal festivals and live entertainment. Indian River State College hosts performing arts productions and cultural programming open to the public. Families will also find water parks, sports complexes, and community recreation centers scattered throughout the city's 120-plus square miles, ensuring there's always something within easy reach — whether you're near the river, the preserve, or the western communities.

History

From Fishing Camp to Florida's Sixth-Largest City

The name "St. Lucie" traces its roots to 1566, when Spanish settlers established a community near Jupiter Inlet on St. Lucia's Day — making it one of the oldest surviving European place names in the United States. Yet the city bearing that ancient name is strikingly young. As recently as the 1950s, the land that would become Port Saint Lucie was little more than a fishing camp — Burt Pruitt's Fishin' Farm — a handful of farms, and scrubland stretching along the North Fork of the St. Lucie River.

Everything changed in 1958, when the General Development Corporation (GDC) invested $50 million to purchase 40,000 acres along that river. A year later, GDC opened the first bridge over the St. Lucie River, and by early 1961, 250 homes had already been built. On April 27, 1961, Governor C. Farris Bryant signed House Bill No. 953, officially incorporating Port Saint Lucie as a city. That original grid of platted lots — laid out methodically by GDC across the flatlands west of U.S. 1 — still defines much of the city's older residential fabric today, where mature trees shade streets in neighborhoods like Floresta Gardens and Sandpiper Bay.

The next major wave came in the early 1990s, when Core Communities began developing St. Lucie West, a mixed-use community that brought roughly 7,000 jobs and reshaped the city's economic identity. In 2006, Core Communities launched Tradition, a master-planned community west of I-95 modeled on 1950s small-town design, which today remains one of the most sought-after addresses in the city. The 2007–2009 housing collapse hit hard — nearly 11,000 homes entered foreclosure in 2008 — but the city's broad geographic footprint and diverse planning legacy gave it the resilience to recover. That layered history, from GDC's original plats to Tradition's walkable town center, is precisely what gives today's Port Saint Lucie buyers such a wide range of neighborhoods and price points to choose from.

Weather

Port Saint Lucie sits in a transitional climate zone between the humid subtropical conditions that define Central Florida and the tropical warmth characteristic of South Florida — giving the city some of the most consistently pleasant weather on the eastern seaboard. Summers are hot and humid, with daytime highs regularly reaching the low 90s °F and overnight lows hovering in the mid-to-upper 70s. The Atlantic Ocean, just a short distance to the east, moderates temperature extremes while also fueling the afternoon thunderstorms that roll through with remarkable regularity from June through September.

Winters are mild and inviting, with average highs comfortably in the 70s °F and lows that rarely dip below the mid-50s. Hard freezes are exceptionally rare, making Port Saint Lucie a year-round destination for outdoor enthusiasts. Annual rainfall averages around 53 to 54 inches, with the bulk concentrated in the summer wet season. The city's position on the Treasure Coast also places it within the Atlantic hurricane belt, and residents take storm preparedness seriously.

For homebuyers, the climate shapes nearly every aspect of real estate ownership. Outdoor living spaces — screened lanais, pools, and covered patios — are highly valued and used throughout the year. Cooling costs dominate utility budgets during the long summer months, while heating expenses remain minimal. Buyers should also factor in hurricane-resistant construction features, impact windows, and flood zone designations as standard considerations when evaluating properties here.
