Port Royal's story begins in the early 1950s, when developer John Glen Sample purchased a sprawling peninsula of mangrove-lined waterfront land on the southern edge of Naples and set about creating one of Florida's most ambitious residential communities. Sample's vision was deliberate and uncompromising: a private, deed-restricted enclave of grand estates oriented toward the water, with deep-draft canals engineered to give as many homes as possible direct access to Naples Bay and the Gulf of Mexico.
The canal system Sample commissioned remains one of Port Royal's defining features today. Dredged with remarkable precision, these waterways transformed raw subtropical terrain into some of the most coveted boating addresses in the country. Deed restrictions were crafted from the outset to preserve architectural standards, lot sizes, and the neighborhood's exclusivity — covenants that have held firm for more than seven decades.
By the 1960s and 1970s, Port Royal had attracted prominent families and discerning buyers who recognized the rare combination of privacy, deep-water access, and proximity to downtown Naples. The Port Royal Club, a private members-only institution, became the social anchor of the community and remains so to this day.
